Tremendous progress has been made on the Coast to Crest Trail – the San Dieguito River Park’s primary recreational feature – 49 miles of this regional multi-use trail are complete that will one day extend 71 miles from the coast at Del Mar to the crest at Volcan Mountain, near Julian.
The 50th mile is planned to open in 2025 as the Osuna Trail project. However, 21 miles of gaps remain in the Coast to Crest Trail. In 2022, the JPA and the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy embarked on the Get-to-71 Campaign and raised over $2M to help close those gaps and finish the CTC Trail.
Planning, design, and engineering are now underway for 13 miles of backcountry gaps – a 5-mile gap in East San Pasqual Valley and an 8-mile gap at Lake Sutherland. The goal is to design the trails to a “shovel-ready” stage to be eligible for public construction grant funds.
