This project will extend public access along the north side of the river between Jimmy Durante Boulevard and the existing railroad bridge in Del Mar along the Fairgrounds as a new segment of Coast to Crest Trail. A 25-foot-wide Recreational Buffer was set aside several years ago but never improved for safe public access. This project will provide a 1,300-foot fenced path along the river edge, a new accessible connection (ramp) from Jimmy Durante, and a turnaround at the west end near the railroad bridge. This project is a component of the Reach the Beach Trail.
The west end turnaround will feature a Western Gateway to the San Dieguito River Park with views of the San Dieguito River and ocean inlet beyond. The Western Gateway project ties together the Park’s eastern gateway, the Hubbell Gates at the crest at Volcan Mountain. Like the Hubbell Gates designed by world-renowned San Diego artist James Hubbell, the western gateway is designed by James Hubbell and his family and will provide a uniquely beautiful resting spot and celebrate our connection to the river.
A generous gift from the Del Mar Foundation kick-started the project design. In August 2023 the JPA was awarded $1.3M in state funds by Senator Pro-Tempore Toni Atkins to fund this project.
