The California Coastal Commission unanimously approved the San Dieguito River Park’s first ranger station at their June 2015 Commission hearing in Newport Beach. The 2,400-square foot Lagoon Ranger Station will be located east of Interstate 5 at Via de la Valle next to the San Andres Drive trail parking area. Overlooking the San Dieguito Lagoon it will provide ranger offices, an enclosed garage and work yard, and the River Park\\\’s first public restroom (that isn\\\’t a portable!). Designed for efficiency by rinehart/herbst architects, it will function as a much-needed work area for River Park rangers performing maintenance and monitoring of the surrounding trail system and lagoon area.
A small conference room and wet lab will also offer a place for meetings, education, and scientific study of the surrounding estuary. Park rangers will be able to comfortably interact with volunteers and people who come to learn more about the San Dieguito River Park and enjoy the trails. We are certain it will be an attractive asset for the San Dieguito River Park and the surrounding community.
The JPA is now proceeding with detailed construction plans and will initiate a bid process to hire a contractor. Construction is anticipated to begin towards the end of 2015.
