Thank you to all the San Dieguito Lagoon Boardwalk supporters who rallied to support the boardwalk trail. The JPA, City of Del Mar, and 22nd Agricultural District staff worked out a plan with the local Coastal Commission staff to save over half of the boardwalk but remove 682 feet in order to facilitate a better wetland restoration design for the Fairgrounds south overflow parking lot.
The new plan was approved by the JPA Board at a special meeting on April 8, 2015. The design allows part of the boardwalk to remain in place, including a viewing platform and the several hundred donor name plates along the boardwalk planks, and adds a new multi-use trail along the northern edge of the new wetlands to extend the Coast to Crest Trail to Jimmy Durante Boulevard.
Both the new trail and remaining boardwalk will be adjacent to newly restored wetlands providing up-close views of the new wetland plants and birds that will soon occupy the area. The trail and restoration are expected to be complete by May 2016. It is hoped that the salvaged boardwalk planks can be used on the future Del Mar Riverpath.
