Happy Mother’s Day to all the mom’s out there!
We had lots of baby birds on this May count to help us celebrate.
We tallied 121 species, and two new species in Area 4, bringing our cumulative total to 260. New species included a Swinhoe’s White-eye seen by Sue Smith and a Calliope Hummingbird found by Sean Buchanan.
Other interesting observations included not one, but two, osprey nests in area 4. One was in the process of being built on top of a cell tower near the race track, and the other recurring osprey nest by the lagoon had 2 young that we could see, along with the 2 adults. In area 2 there was a family of Vermilion Flycatchers observed, so they have successfully bred in our count area. We had an adult male and female along with two recently fledged young.
In addition, Area 3 had a Blue Grosbeak, area 2 had a Yellow-headed Blackbird, and Area 5 had several Lazuli Buntings.
Thanks to everyone who participated in this month’s San Dieguito River Park count.
