No new species, so our cumulative total remains at 266. Every area had Western Kingbirds coming through, including 27 in area 3! Area 3 also had a Baird’s Sandpiper. Species of note included a new one, Lesser Nighthawk in area 1. This brings the overall cumulative total to 261. In addition, we observed a Black-chinned Hummingbird in Area 1; as well as at least 1 Tricolored Blackbird, and two American Robins in Area 2, species we don’t see that often. The summer doldrums are just about here, but we still managed to find 90 species this month, keeping the overall cumulative total at 260 with no new species. The San Dieguito Monthly Bird Count identified 116 species in December, with no new species. This leaves the cumulative species total at 243 after 10 full years of bird surveys. (Post Updated 3/22/17) In March 2014, the Del Mar Fairgrounds removed the three tall light poles from their paved parking lot. Osprey had built nests on two of those poles.
